School Library Journal Review
Gr 8 Up-This interesting and informative collection of essays, articles, and analyses traces the history of strife in the region and looks at the current situation from a variety of perspectives. The writers discuss the complex issues with attention toward readers who may be unfamiliar with the circumstances of the Middle Eastern conflict. The selections expound on the importance of Jerusalem and the groups, both the religious and political, that wish to control the city. International influences and involvement by the U.S., Britain, and Russia are also addressed. The articles are mostly by scholars and political scientists writing about the conflict, but the book does include primary sources from Ariel Sharon and Yasser Arafat. Unfamiliar terms are parenthetically defined. The articles substantiate their own arguments by citing other documents. The book offers an extensive list of further reading and a useful chronology. The only visuals are three maps. A solid resource.-Joel Bangilan, Houston Public Library, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information. From: Reed Elsevier Inc. Copyright Reed Business Information
