Dee sees giant talking ducks, and The Bunny Boy's worn the same Halloween costume for years. But when the kids stop playing together and turn into teenagers, the ducks become monsters and the bunnysuits become mod suits, and just as things start to settle, the world changes forever. Jamaica Dyer's acclaimed web comic comes to print at SLG with all of the oddness and beauty that you would expect from her work

One of the many fascinating things about Dyer's graphic-novel ode to eccentricity is to witness the evolution and sophistication of her style from start to finish. Originally a webcomic, the story follows two junior-high outsiders, the doe-eyed Dee, who sees things no one else can (from talking ducks to frightening demonish creatures), and her chain-smoking comrade-in-odd, Bunny Boy, whose bunny-eared costume simultaneously amplifies and undercuts his angsty demeanor. On the surface, the story line is somewhat thin, though it touches on issues the malleability of identity, the confusing borders of friendship and attraction familiar to most any teen. But this is no slice-of-life comic; the increasingly surreal atmosphere lends itself to multiple levels of interpretation, as does Dyer's willingness, and even compulsion, to experiment at nearly every turn. Although it's evident from this black-and-white volume that Dyer is an exquisite artist, readers owe it to themselves to look at the online version, where her rich watercolor washes add an entirely different, and stunning, depth to the art.--Chipman, Ian Copyright 2009 Booklist
